THE ART OF DIGITAL PRESERVATION

This video is published by Preservica, a digital preservation platform that allows digital repositories to provide access and description to digitally preserved materials. However, Preservica ins’t limited to digital archives. This video covers the different uses of digital preservation and challenges and issues faced when considering storage. The challenges faced when considering storage involve data fixity issues (when data becomes corrupted over time) and the obsolescence of storage media. One suggestion the video makes is the use of cloud computing to store digitally preserved data. Additionally, the video suggests the use of metadata to help organize and describe the digitally preserved material to help access it quickly. This tutorial is a concise and accurate description of the process of digital preservation and how metadata is created and used.

WILLIAM KILBRIDE, DIGITAL PRESERVATION COALITION

This podcast is produced and developed by Digital Preservation and is powered by the Library of Congress. The host of the podcast is Mike Ashenfelder of the Library of Congress. The podcast primarily discusses data management and digital preservation in the United Kingdom. This podcast interviews William Kilbride who represents the Digital Preservation Coalition. The Digital Preservation Coalition seeks to provide outreach, training and education, and digital preservation advocacy. The interview discusses the experiences William had with the Archaeological Data Service and Glasgow Museums. During the interview, Kilbride discusses challenges and issues that preservationists encounter with funding and standards. Kilbride mentions that digital preservation programs can be planned without having substantial resources and would simply need to be developed slowly and methodically.
