PERSONAL ARCHIVING

The Library of Congress provides this resource free of charge to patrons, it contains a wealth of information and tutorials that can aid digital preservation and metadata professionals, as well as amateurs, in the development and practice of digital preservation and description. Among the links available are tutorials on scanning, personal archiving, and the importance of digital preservation. This resource also provides free resources that can help a small or large archive plan and implement a personal digital archiving day where patrons can come and have their personal collections scanned and digitally preserved. Additionally, the resource provides tutorials on how to preserve a variety of different types of materials, including photographs, audio and video, and e-mails. Lastly, the resource provides additional resources for further reading.

DIGITAL PRESERVATION BEST PRACTICES AND GUIDELINES

This resource is provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences. Digital preservation education is a website that provides information, tutorials, and links to a range of different topics concerning digital preservation. Some of the topics it covers are introductions to digital preservation, how-to guides, and how to develop and present a case for the importance of a digital preservation program at one’s institution. Additionally, this resource will be helpful to a local or community archives through the tutorials it provides. The tutorials and video section includes links to different types of digital preservation, including managing electronic public records, digital image preservation, and preserving social media data. Lastly, the resource provides further reading links and additional resources that can provide helpful information.

CARE & HANDLING OF RARE BOOKS, PAPER, MANUSCRIPTS, PHOTOGRAPHS & ARCHIVES

This video is a tutorial on the care and preservation of rare books and other archival materials. This video discusses the everyday practice of and standards of the Auckland Libraries. The video takes place at the Auckland Library in New Zealand. The video covers digital preservation, as well as physical preservation, and discusses this in two areas. The first is preventive preservation and interventionist conservation, which deals primarily with restoring and recovering materials that have deteriorated. Additionally, the video discusses techniques to preserve many different types of materials and bindings. In addition to the preservation of materials, the video discusses the use of gloves and other techniques to help in the preservation process and not cause further damage.
